Tips for Casual Teachers

  • Arrive to the classroom early to read the lesson plan thoroughly
  • During class make an effort to learn the students’ names
  • Exhibit confidence
  • Introduce yourself to the students at the beginning of the day
  • Explain your behaviour management plan to the students at the beginning of the day
    • For example;
    • When they hear you ring the bell they are to stop what they are doing and look at you
    • The two students who try their best all day will receive a merit award at the end of the day
  • Be friendly to the students and the staff
  • Check any duties you may need to cover and ensure you are on time in the correct area
  • Bring lesson ideas for the class as a back up plan
  • Compliment the students
  • Manage your time efficiently
  • Bring a whistle to use in a PE lesson or while on duty
  • Try to get the work done set by the teacher as best as you can
  • At the end of the day ensure the students clean the classroom
  • Return the teacher’s desk to the way it was in the morning
  • Leave a note for the teacher explaining how the day went
